Individuals around the world are concerned about the pandemic that has changed the way we live and work. Companies deemed non-essential were forced to close their operations during the quarantine period to stop the spread of COVID-19. Corporations focused on the health and safety of their employees and have asked their employees to work from home to protect their staff. Parents are now teaching their school age children while school districts are shut down. Daily routines that revolved around commuting and busy work schedules, have been completely disrupted.

The role that leaders play during this pandemic is paramount. Critical decisions must be made every day to assist us with navigating through this storm. The world needs empathetic leaders who care, take charge, enlist advice from experts and communicate effectively the information that we need to know.

Corporate leaders should practice empathy during this time of uncertainty and lead with kindness. Leaders should be open and transparent regarding changes and developments. Communicate before changes occur so employees can provide input and be heard. Employees will embrace change if they understand the motive and how it furthers the organization’s mission and affects their individual performance too.

During uncertain times, leaders need to be respectful and kind toward their employees. We need to understand the stresses employees face; they may be concerned about family or friends who are sick or grieving the loss of a loved one. Interaction with employees is important, communicate with them and let them voice questions or concerns.

Additionally, leaders should promote accountability and fairness within their organization. Employees want to be acknowledged for their efforts and accomplishments. Consistent feedback from leaders should emphasize their strengths and recognize successes. Leaders should encourage cross-functional meetings and communication. This practice streamlines processes and boosts efficiency.

Corporate leaders across the world recognize that this pandemic will change how we do business today and in the future. We need to lead by example, treating others with kindness and respect. Our world leaders must rise up to meet the challenges that face us in the “New Normal” after our quarantine ends and we return to work.  “It is in times of crisis that true leaders emerge.” -Rudi Guiliani
